Bigwall Climbing in Kyrgyzstan 08 Update PDF Print E-mail

Hey everybody

We back in SA after having a really great time in an Awesome part of the world. The highlight being our ascent of Petrogrades 5163m. Check out the pictures below. The tedious work now starts with the sorting of pictures and video footage. I think we will put together a great slide show.

I would also like to thank Lisa for keeping this group updated while we were away. She has been to backbone of this group and channel of communication.

Secondly, I would like to thank every one of you for your interest and support. Also the sponsors, without whom this trip might not have happened.

Will keep you posted with slideshow dates

Regards

Andreas

Sunday 17 Aug

Hellloooo!!! Sorry for the update delay, things have been crazy!! Having said that, this will also be my last entry as THE GUYS WILL BE HOME ON THURSDAY!!!! Then you can pretty much hear it all from the horse's mouth AND see the spectacular pics and some video clips that I'm sure they have taken...so, here goes:

They left ABC for Alexander Block at 5am last Sunday and after nine hours and ten plus pitches of hard blue ice they reached the col, exhausted and with weather that wasn't that good. They decided to bivy. It was VERY cold and they spent the night rubbing their toes and trying to keep warm. To climb A.Block they would have had to bivy again and decided against it, so they packed up ABC and carried down to base.

The following day was spent climbing a 'small' hill next to base camp, an easy but spectacular route up a knife edge ridge for approximately 12 pitches. They were back in time to celebrate one of the Russians' birthday - with plenty of Vodka & night bouldering.

Thursday was spent doing some hard bouldering and Friday Andreas & Mark left their base camp to explore the Karavashin (sp?) Gorge, with mountains such as Russian Tower, Asan Peak (4810m), etc. They will be doing a round trip where they will end in Uskaresh where they will find a lift to Tashkent.

Last night they camped near Asan and Usan Peak and Yellow Tower and by the sounds of it they are beautiful mountains. Tommy Cadwell was kidnapped around Yellow Tower a few years back but according to Andreas it's "so peaceful now".

Well, it seems that's all I have right now...communication between the guys and home is sketchy but Andreas can give you the nitty gritty when he's back :-)

Thanks for all your support!!!!

Cheers!
