The UIAA (translated the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation) is the recognised international federation for mountain sports and the acknowledged expert on all international climbing and mountaineering matters. It has 92 member associations in 68 countries representing over 2,5 million individual members.

The MCSA was invited to join the UIAA in 1995 and is one of only two bodies in Africa that is part of the UIAA. (The other coming from Morocco.)

Through its membership of the UIAA the MCSA is afforded many opportunities. Some being in the form on knowledge access to the UIAA commission, on which representatives of the MCSA also sit, and international expeditions and training initiatives.
